Wednesday is Bicycle Day for MC Chandigarh Employees

From March 7, Wednesday, MC Chandigarh’s about 3000 employees will be seen cycling to the office.

Why?

MC Commissioner Jitender Yadav has ruled that MC employees including senior officers would come by bicycle on Wednesdays. Only those with a genuine medical ground will be spared. Those living on the outskirts Panchkula and Mohali, however, can take public transport.

The two objectives behind this move are keeping the employees fit and ensuring smooth traffic flows in the city.

Employees will have to come in on Wednesdays at 9 am, sharp, and leave office at 5 pm, sharp.

All the HODs have been directed to ensure proper compliance of the order on every Wednesday and submit reports regularly. The employees were also instructed to use the newly demarcated cycle tracks around the city (as part of the Smart City plan) and give feedback.

This move is welcome, provided it is implemented honestly. In December 2015, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Employees Welfare Association gave a similar call to ‘bicycle to work’. Several judges were seen walking to the high court, lawyers observing a car-free day and others riding bicycles to encourage staff members, but the day was observed just once.
