Biopic on Chandigarh Braveheart ‘Neerja’ Wins National Award

The biopic that left every eye in Chandigarh misty and chest swelled with pride has found its name amongst the best in Indian cinema.

Neerja, biopic based on the lifestory of Chandigarh girl, Neerja Bhanot, has been awarded with the distinguished National Award in the category Best Hindi Feature Film at the 64th National Film awards. The actress, Sonam Kapoor, got special mention at the National Awards for her superlative portrayal of the braveheart onscreen.

Directed by Ram Madhvani, the film stars Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi. A biopic pays tribute to the supreme sacrifice of Neerja Bhanot, an airline purser who gave up her life saving passengers on the US-bound Pan Am flight 73. The airplane was hijacked by Palestinian terrorists in Karachi in September 1986.

Posthumously, she became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra Award.

The movie also went to win various awards in B-town as well.

The Proud Bhanot family

It was not the cast and crew celebrating the feat, the proud Bhanot family are flooded with congratulatory messages from all over. Aneesh Bhanot, Neerja’s brother, feels not only humbled and proud that her sister’s sacrifice has touched so many hearts. “It is a truly deserving award. The entire team of Neerja, and, of course, Sonam Kapoor did real justice to the film. Sonam and Shabana Azmi did not look at their characters in the film as mere characters; they lived and felt the pain of Neerja’s family, which showed on screen too.”
