The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) is exploring the idea of constructing cycle tracks in the city, just like in Chandigarh.
The project has been outsourced to a Chandigarh-based consultant S T Associates. The MC officials, along with experts from S T Associates conducted a field survey and a cycle track on a pilot basis will start soon. Having gauged its success, the cycle tracks will be constructed all over the city.
First Cycle Track on YPS road
The first cycle track on trial basis will come up on YPS road. The cycle track will measure 2.7 km in length, starting YPS crossing extending upto Kubran village crossing, after which it will turn towards Forest Complex in Sector 68.
The team decided that the service lane along the YPS road will be widened and a divider will separate the service lane from cycle track. Also, the road surface of the cycle track will be painted red with a sketch of a cyclist on it.
Responsibilities assigned to S T Associates:
- The company will conduct the topographical survey of the roads. It will use electronic total station up to right of way, cover features, structures, telephone poles, streetlights that falls in the row with its level complete in all respects.
- It will submit three sets of drawings along with a soft copy in AutoCAD including all tools, equipment and manpower complete as per directions of engineer-in-charge.
- The company will prepare proposals and designs of cycle track as per IRC specifications in order to be effective and planned in an integrated manner, so as to ensure cyclists’ traffic flow for an area.
- It will also prepare an overall strategic plan to reduce their conflict with vehicular traffic flow to minimum.

The Mohali MC Commissioner, Sandeep Hans, said, “Cycle tracks are a must as per the smart city concept. We will get this track constructed on trial basis and later will spread the concept in the entire city.”
