Chandigarh still have to wait longer for smoother roads. As per Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, 50% of the total planned work is still pending and will still linger on owing to ongoing monsoons.
Though in the first phase, road work worth Rs 4 crore was sanctioned to be done but due to COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown and monsoons, the work was stalled.
Still, giving some relief to commuters, Chief Engineer of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Shailender, said that the staff has been ordered to fill in and complete patchwork in places with potholes.
He is hopeful that the pending road work will begin by September 15.
Chandigarh roads have been in bad condition since July, 2019. The civic body cited multiple reasons for the delay – shortage of fund, when funds were sanctioned, it was already winters and then COVID-19 happened.
Some councillors have been proposing to take up the task during lockdown like Kharar Flyover, however MC cited shortage of labour as the reason. Only priority work was taken up during lockdown period.
The opposition leaders are not impressed with the reasoning of the civic body and ask why the citizens have been harried for past one year.
