A heart-wrenching incident has come to light on Wednesday evening. A body of a newly-born girl child was recovered from a freshly-dug 2.5 deep grave in the jungles of Sukhna Lake’s Bird Walk.
A vigilant Times of India correspondent, Vikram Jit Singh, spotted suspicious digging by group of men in the restricted forest area at about 5.15 pm, when he was returning from the bird-watching walk. He informed the UT forest and wildlife department’s guards who in turn turned to those men to inquire what they were upto. They suspected the body of a girl child being buried. However, they were badly threatened by them. The correspondent and the forest guards led the police to the jungle having noted down the registration numbers of their two SUVs.
The child was wrapped in warm clothes with a “Love” logo embroidered on the jacket and coated with layers of salt to make the body dissolve quickly.
The Chandigarh police and guards located the grave with great difficulty in the darkness of the night. Also, the group had covered the grave carefully with leaf litter to make it appear a normal spot of the jungle floor. The spot was across two dry nallahs branching from the main nallah coming from Saketri and full of stagnant water. The child was wrapped in warm clothes with a “Love” logo embroidered on the jacket and coated with layers of salt to make the body dissolve quickly.
With the help of SUVs registration numbers, the police have traced the men and investigating the matter.
