Ways to calculate your score

You can easily calculate your expected score for the examination with the help of the answer key provided to you by CBSE. This will also help you in getting an idea of your approximate rank before the actual results are declared. As per the marking scheme for NEET, +4 marks are awarded for every correct answer while 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. 0 marks given for any question which is not attempted or if more than one answer is marked for a question.

The total marks for the paper are 720 distributed over 180 MCQs as declared by CBSE. To calculate your score, use this simple formula:

(Number of correct answers * 4) – (Number of incorrect answers * -1)

To get a higher score, you should always prefer marking the answers only when you are very sure about them. If you are not sure about your answers, do not take the risk of marking wrong answers as they will cause you a loss of 5 marks because of negative marking.

Your final score obtained in the examination will determine your rank in the merit list of NEET. There is no category wise merit list, just an All India merit list is declared for the qualified candidates. States prepare their own merit list on the basis of category and the All India list.

In case of a tie, the one who has scored higher marks in the Biology section of the exam is preferred. Next parameter for rank in case of the tie still persisting is the marks obtained in Chemistry. Further tiebreaker is the lesser number of wrong answers. In such situations, the candidate older in age is also preferred. After knowing this, I am sure you know that Biology is your key to scoring a better rank. Focus on marking as many accurate answers as possible and avoid marking the ones you are unsure about.

Ways to calculate Percentile Score

The percentile score is the minimum marks you need to score to qualify. This score is based on your relative score in comparison to candidates who have qualified for NEET 2018. It will be calculated as per your relative position with respect to all the other candidates in the merit list. There is a formula for you to calculate your percentile score as well on the basis of your All India Rank:

100- (Your Rank * 100)/ Total number of candidates

For the Unreserved Category (UR), the qualifying percentile is 50 percentile which is equivalent to 360 marks out of 720. However, for Other Backward Classes (OBC)/ Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST), the minimum qualifying percentile is 40 percentile which is 288 marks out of 720. Percentile required for Physically Handicapped (PH) is 45 which is further 324 marks for unreserved category and 288 for the reserved category.

Needless to say, you need to step up your game and aim to qualify marks way higher than the minimum qualifying percentile score. However, obtaining the marks specified above will help you secure a place in the merit list for NEET 2018.

Seat Allotment at the national level and state level

After the result and counselling, the seat allotment procedure begins. You need to register for the counselling session online to be able to participate in the seat allotment process. The seats will be allotted to you on the basis of your rank and your college preference which you will have to mention in your counselling form. 15% of the seats are under All India Quota and the remaining 85% of the seats are under State Quota.

For the seats under All India Quota, 27% of the seats are reserved for those of you from OBC Category (non-creamy layer), 27% for Scheduled Caste Category, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe Category and 3% for Physically Handicapped. All of you can apply for the All India seats and fill your preferred colleges for the counselling and seat allotment procedure. Study well for the exam, score a better rank and increase your chances of getting admission in your desired college.

The remaining 85% of the seats, after the 15% seats given under All India Quota, are to be allotted under State Quota. If any of the All India seats go vacant, they are also put under State Quota. This is all done on the basis of your rank in the All India Rank merit list provided by CBSE for NEET 2018. So if you do not get admission under the All India quota, do not feel disheartened. There is still 85% chance for you to get it under the State level seat allotment process.

Now that you have all the information regarding your scorecard and seat allotment ready with you, keep all your worries aside and kick start your preparation for NEET 2018. Good Luck!
