Littering In Chandigarh Will Cost You Dear; ₹10,000 Fine To The Defaulter

Be ready to shell out ₹5000 to ₹10,000, if you are found littering in public places in Chandigarh.

The UT Chandigarh administration has finally notified the Municipal Corporation (Sanitation and Public Health Amendment Bylaws, 2017) which first were approved in May, 2017. Now with the notification, the fine has got a legal sanction.

Littering in residential areas will be fined ₹5,000 and in commercial establishments, the fine is ₹10,000.

According to the new bylaws, the defaulter will be charged for the removal and disposal of the waste at the rates decided by the MC. If the defaulter faulted in paying the fine, it will be added to his/her waterbill.

Not FINE but “RECOVERY CHARGES”

MC joint commissioner Manoj Khatri has said that the fine will be termed as “recovery charges”. The reason given for the terminology is that the amount of the fine will be used for employing additional labour and machinery to clear the garbage.

What is Littering, Afterall?

♦ Throwing garbage outside a house or shop or in a public place

♦ Accumulation of water outside houses

♦ Throwing debris

♦ Disposing waste in non-designated areas

Inspection teams to check Littering

Chandigarh MC is in no mood to take sanitation in the city lightly. From 2016’s second rank in Swachh Survekshan Survey, Chandigarh shockingly has slipped to 11th this year.

MC Chandigarh Joint Commissioner said, “Inspection teams will be constituted under a sanitation inspector and a health supervisor. The teams will act on the complaints. The defaulter will have to pay the challan at the office of medical officer health. ”
