Deputy commissioner Mandip Singh Brar has imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Gopal Sweets, Sector 8, for selling food items in unhygienic and insanitary conditions.

Food Being Sold Without Hygiene Measures

On November 28, 2018, a food safety officer from the health department, Government Multi- Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, conducted an inspection at the shop, and found that food articles like ras malai, ladoos, milkcake, etc., were being sold without hygiene measures.

Therefore, a challan was issued under Section 26 (2)(v) and 56 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and a case was filed with the the deputy commissioner-cum-adjudicating officer.

A fine of Rs 10,000 has also been imposed on Shake Club, Shop Number 5, near Student Centre, Panjab University, for preparing and selling sandwiches, manchurian and fried rice under dirty conditions.

Eating joints at the Student Centre were fined earlier in the year too. In February this year, Mama Mia, Shop Number 12, Student Centre, PU, was found selling food articles like cooked paneer, dal, shakes, juices, tea and coffee without hygiene. Another eating joint in PU, University Sweets, is popular for it’s evening inexpensive snacks like samosas and jalebis. The eatery was fined in a similar manner in April this year.
