You read that correctly, PEC is all set to be elevated to the level of an IIT.
This news had been doing the rounds for some time now. It gets a step closer as Chandigarh administration has finally approved what it had promised. A 100-cr rupees grant has been sanctioned towards the upgrade of the Punjab Engineering College and its infrastructure.
This upgrade will help PEC to be elevated to the level of an Indian Institute of Technology. If everything goes as planned PEC could celebrate its 100 th year of establishment with a new branding in 2020.
“In preparation of the 100-year celebrations and for showing commitment of the administration towards the upgrade of the institution, we decided to spend this money.” Home-cum-education secretary, Anurag Aggarwal stated.
He further added,“PEC Management has prepared a list of projects that will be executed with this money. These will be executed by the UT engineering department over four years. Some drawings have been finalized, other drafts are under preparation. We will call tenders. Money will be spent by the engineering department on the infrastructure.”
What Will Be Added In The Present Infrastructure?
♦ Boys and girls will get a new hostel each
♦ Auditorium and sports complex will be renovated
♦ Construction of new international guest house and dormitories
♦ Employment of additional staff
Right now, there is a shortage of hostels. There are 4 boys’ hostels and 2 girls’ hostels. These funds will provide for the necessary shortcomings. All hostels will be made appropriate for accommodation. Though talks for land and buildings haven’t been initiated as of now, the administration has clarified the HRD ministry on the allocation of extra land if needed.
