Chandigarh | Decision on Weekend Curfew Deferred to Next Week

Soaring number of COVID-19 positive cases in Tricity has made the Chandigarh administration to consider weekend curfew in Chandigarh. UT Adviser Manoj Parida had written to the Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana to agree to UT’s proposal for curfew in the tri-city during weekend, since weekend curfew only in UT will not be effective, unless it was simultaneously imposed in Mohali & Panchkula. However, Punjab and Haryana rejected the proposal. In the light of it and discussions with doctors, officers traders associations, political leaders, the decision  with ‘a fresh view’ has been deferred to next week.

UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore gave following directions:

• Commissioner, Municipal Corporation MCChandigarh and Deputy Commissioner will conduct surprise checks in various markets if major violations are found, that particular market/shop could be closed for the safety of residents.

• The doctors will be on more stringent screening and testing particularly during the next 10 days to detect hidden cases.

• Meanwhile, strict screening of persons coming from outside at the borders to be ensured and action will be taken against those who violate night curfew orders.

• Police, Revenue and Municipal officials will have more field inspections and checks whether the residents are following home quarantine /social distancing and mask wearing norms in markets and other public places like parks, Sukhna Lake etc.

On these directions, DC Mandip Brar & SSP Nilambari Jagadale have constituted the teams including SDM’s, DSP’s, MC officials and started the drive around the city to keep a check on people not adhering to the social distancing norms/not wearing masks.
