Chandigarh Admn Plans to Remove Overhead Transformers, Wires in Selected Sectors

Overhead transformers and high tension wires that hang precariously on the edges of slip roads, road berms and parking lots are a grave hazard. To eliminate the danger posed by them, UT Electricity Department has decided to lay underground electricity cables and heavy-duty electricity wiring instead. Additionally overhead transformers will be converted into compact underground substations as part of the project.

UT electricity department has singled out four sectors viz. Sectors 7, 9, 11 and 26 to begin the project as the existing power infrastructure there is more than 50 years old, which leads to frequent breakdowns and disruptions in supply.

The Rs 8.05-crore project has been bagged by Hartek Power Pvt Ltd, and is scheduled to be completed by December.
