The dismal vaccination coverage among children in Chandigarh is worrisome especially in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases in neighbouring states and UTs. The Chandigarh administration is now considering restricting unvaccinated students from attending classes in schools.

UT Adviser Dharam Pal said, “Considering the increasing Covid cases and to protect children, there is a possibility that after a few days, unvaccinated children may be advised not to attend physical classes.”

He also shared the concern over slow pace of vaccination among children despite special camps being organised in many schools.

Age Group Per cent of children with First vaccination dose done Per cent of children with second vaccination dose done
15-17~90%~52%
12-14~29%~0.5%

The UT administration has plan of action prepared to cover all eligible children within 15 days and vaccination camps will be organised in schools to expedite it. The authorities have been directed to compile data of unvaccinated children and prepare a schedule for the schools where Covid vaccination camps can be organised by the Health Department. There will be a definite aim to vaccinate at least 50 children at each vaccination camp.
