Bareilly Ki Barfi Movie Review: Sweeter Than Barfi Itself

Cast: Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Seema Pahwa
Director: Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari
Duration : 2 hours

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s Bareilly Ki Barfi is toothsome and delicious. You would want to take a box full of it with you.
It adduces small-town romance that hits all the right chords thanks to the cheerful screenplay and quality acting by a wonderful cast. And yes you read that right, it stars Rajkumar Rao. I am out of words to praise him. Why don’t they just give him all the awards already?

Meethi Barfi ki Recipe
Bitti (Kriti Sanon) is a liberal spirit who does not abide by the rules the society for a sankaari kanya as she smokesdrinks and watches pirated movies, supported fully by her father Narottam Mishra played by Pankaj Tripathi, who bums cigarettes from her when he exhausts his own stock and completely understands when she say Ladki hona disaster hai. Then there is mother played by Seema Pahwa who is a school teacher and serves only tea and sharbat to her guests. She calls Bitti a chaudail for roaming late at night but cries her heart out when she runs away. Despite non-interferring parents Bitti feels suffocated because marriage is the ultimate goal for them and non-bigoted men are hard to find.

“R u a virgeeen?”

Asks one potential husband on the terrace of her home to which she counter questions, “Are you?”.

After getting rejected again she decides to run away, when she comes across a book that saves her life and botches her attempt to escape from home. She becomes obsessed over tracking down the author of the book Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao) as she discovers that the heroin is a lot like her and takes the help of a printing press owner Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana). How this sumptuous treat of delicacy is prepared then is for you to see.

My Review
All the ingredients to make this barfi delicious are there and in right quantity.

Rajkumar Rao is the Khoya of this barfi. He showcases an optimal performance and touches all the little aspects acutely from his accent to the body language. His split from an affable Pritam into an obnoxious Vidhrohi is exceptional.

Ayushmann Khurana’s ethereal performance as an unrequited lover is very charming. His portrayal of Chirag is very real as he showcases a selfish young madly-in-love north Indian guy.

Kriti Sanon plays the center of this love triangle. She delivers inarguably her best performance of the career. She fits the bill as the girl next door and gets everything right from the accent to the styling. Even with frizzy hair, dried lips and torn off sweaters she looks bewitching.

Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa have some of the best scenes in the movie which will leave in you splits. Rohit Choudhary who plays Ayushmann’s best friend needs a special mention.
Direction by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is very authentic and admirable. She does full justice and is written by Dangal’s writer-director Nitish Tiwari and Shreyas Jain. Sweety Tera Drama and Twist Kamariya are irresistible numbers where as Nazm Nazm by Arko is a lovely soulful track. The narrative is predictable as it depends highly on the dialogues but the comedy is light and effortless.

If you are thinking is it flawless?

No, obviously not.

The first half is too stretched and songs are just placed anywhere. But the good thing is it was not trying to be a perfect movie. It is a fun movie and must watch with your family.

5 BEST ATTRACTIONS OF THE MOVIE

  1. Bloody phenomenal performance by Rajkumar Rao.
  2. Beautiful Kriti and charming Ayushmann’s chemistry.
  3. Jokes that will make you laugh out loud so hard.
  4. Seema Pahwa and Pankaj Tripathi’s amazing act.
  5. A sweet fun love triangle with joyful songs.

Even if you are diabetic you should not miss it.
