Many patients die everyday for want of organ transplant or keep suffering for years. The reason being scepticism towards organ donation in the country. But, Chandigarh’s PGIMER achieved an unbelievable feat yesterday. It donated and transported three donated organs within five hours that in turn impacted 11 lives.
The organs were harvested from two brain-dead patients from Himachal Pradesh, Jagat Singh and Nancy Sharma, whose families set an example by donating the organs to help other suffering patients live a healthy life. Their hearts, corneas, kidneys and liver (only from Jagat Singh) were retrieved and used for matching recipients at PGIMER. Since there was no matching in PGI for hearts and liver, they were flown to AIIMS with NOTTO’s (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) intervention.
The organs were transported to New Delhi through Green corridors, created thrice within five hours at 6.38 am, 8.30 am and 11.22 am, by the city administration to take the organs from the hospital to the airport.
Green corridor is a special travel route without any stoppages.
